Province Announces Funding for Mi’kmaq Health Initiative
The province is providing $150,000 in annual funding for five years to help establish a new program for Mi’kmaw people at Cape Breton University.
It says the new Mi’kmaw Chair in Healthy L’nu Communities was created to gather traditional knowledge to improve the health of Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia.
The development of the program comes after research showing a higher rate of some chronic health conditions among Mi’kmaw people.
A number of groups have partnered to create the new chair, including Mi’kmaq officials, the Health Department, the Health Authority and the IWK.
CBU has begun a search to fill the position.
