Whitney Pier native Mayann Francis is being appointed as an officer of the Order of Canada.
Francis is one 61 new appointments to the Order announced this morning.
She’s described by the Governor General’s office as a distinguished public servant, human rights advocate and historic trailblazer.
Francis was the first African Nova Scotian to serve as Nova Scotia’s lieutenant governor.
The appointees will be invited to an investiture ceremony that will be announced later.
