Regional Council Votes To Spend Surplus Funds

Regional Council voted at a special meeting yesterday evening to spend $2,782,000 in surplus funds.

$500,000 dollars is going to Public Works for extra sidewalk and road repairs as well as to provide accessible, paved entry to some facilities.

The Cape Breton Exhibition is getting $500,000, $400,000 is going to Cape Breton University’s Forever Campaign and another $500,000 is going to events to mark the CBRM’s 30th anniversary on August 1st.

$300,000 is being set aside for community rinks, the Louisbourg Playhouse is getting $100,000 for roof and other repairs, $150,000 is going to Cape Breton Search & Rescue while $332,000 will be divided among 10 community not-for-profits.

Councillors Steve Parsons and Kim Sheppard-Campbell voted against the motion to spend the surplus money while Councillor Esmond Blue Marshall abstained.
