Municipality Forwarding Donkin Mine Concerns To MLA’s, MP’s

Regional Councillors have voted to send a letter to the island’s MLA’s and MP’s on the future of the Donkin Mine site.

The mine was closed in March, but area Councillor Amanda McDougall says people in surrounding communities have a number of concerns, including methane gas emissions, air quality control, noise pollution, effects on wildlife and the possibility of remediation.

McDougall says the letter being sent is not taking a position on whether the mine should re-open.

She says it’s asking how both levels of government are going to address the concerns of people in Donkin and surrounding areas.

Mayor Cecil Clarke says the municipality is going to try to set up a virtual meeting between MLA’s, MP’s, and people in communities surrounding the mine.
