Chronicle Herald Buys The Cape Breton Post

The owner of The Chronicle Herald has bought all of Transcontinental’s newspapers in Atlantic Canada, including the Cape Breton Post.

The agreement also includes four of Transcontinental’s printing plants, as well as its distribution system in Atlantic Canada.

It will lead to the creation of a new media company called SaltWire Network.

Halifax Herald Limited CEO and Glace Bay native Mark Lever won’t reveal how much the deal cost them but he does say they got a good price.

He adds all 650 Transcontinental employees in the region will be offered jobs in the same capacity with the same salary and same benefits they have now.

He also acknowledges the 15 month strike with their own newsroom workers, including two in Sydney.

Lever says the company’s latest offer is fair and adds he hopes to reach a settlement soon.
