The Inverness County councillor for Cheticamp has personally paid to remove a dead pilot whale near Cheticamp Beach Road.
Alfred Poirier says he dipped into his own pocket after not being able to get through to federal government agencies.
He adds he didn’t want people in the area and tourists to have to endure the smell from the rotting carcass.
Poirier says the bill to get a backhoe operator to bury the whale comes to 7-hundred dollars.
However, he feels confident some government department will eventually reimburse him.
Meanwhile, a dead fin whale near the tourist information centre at the Canso Causeway continues to create a literal and figurative stink.
Local councillor Dwayne MacDonald says he’s contacted various government departments about removing the whale.
However, the federal government says it’s either up to the province or municipality to deal with the matter because the whale is washed up on shore.
MacDonald says something has to be done about the carcass and adds the County is working with provincial and federal authorities to get it removed.
