Sydney-Glace Bay MP Mike Kelloway announced this morning Sydney is the preferred location for the maintenance port for the Canadian Coast Guard’s future polar icebreakers.
Ottawa says Sydney was chosen as the preferred location following a national assessment to determine the most suitable site.
It says Sydney has key advantages, including having one of the shortest routes to the Arctic from Eastern Canada, proximity to the Coast Guard Academy in Westmount, and opportunities to strengthen collaboration with the Royal Canadian Navy.
It says planning activities will be required to assess the technical feasibility of constructing the polar icebreaker maintenance port in Sydney.
The government says indigenous Peoples will be engaged and consulted throughout the process, in accordance with its duty to consult.
