Donkin Mine Found In Violation of Safety Rules
The operators of the Donkin mine have received 29 warnings and 10 compliance orders from the provincial labour department.
According to provincial inspection reports, some of the findings of labour inspectors include inadequate explosion barriers, structural damage, and missing or broken rescue equipment.
Gary Tighe, with United Mine Workers, says some miners are concerned and he adds he worries the industry is repeating the mistakes of the past.
That statement comes amid a UMW effort to sign up workers at the mine.
Meanwhile, the mine’s operator, Kameron Collieries, says safety is a priority and it’s trying to comply with all the rules governing mining in the province.
The province says imminent danger was not a concern with most of the mine’s violations, and it adds Kameron has cooperated with investigators.
