Police seek Wagmatcook man on assault charges

An arrest warrant has been issued for a 25-year-old Wagmatcook man.
Desmond Bernard faces several charges, including two counts of assault, two counts of assaulting a police officer, eight counts of failing to comply with an officer, and single counts of uttering threats and possession of a dangerous weapon.
He’s described as 6-foot-2 and 240 pounds, with dark brown hair and brown eyes.
Police say he may be in the Sydney area.
Anyone who knows Bernard’s whereabouts is asked not to approach him, but to call the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

No new cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia today

Provincial health officials say there are no new cases of COVID-19 to report today.

There are currently five known, active cases of the respiratory infection in Nova Scotia.

1085 Nova Scotians have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the pandemic began; 65 people have died.
1015 people have recovered from COVID-19.

Rural Cape Bretoners to get smart meters this month

Nova Scotia Power says rural Cape Breton customers will be getting upgraded smart meters starting at the end of the month.
The utility says about 12 thousand customers from Isle Madame to Louisbourg and from Eskasoni to Bras d’Or will be getting their upgraded meters starting September 28.
Smart meter project director Steve Pothier says the new meters will give customers more control over energy usage and costs and quicker response time in an outage.
He says the meters will eliminate the need for on-site visits to connecting or disconnect service, as well as the need for bill estimates.
There is no charge for the upgrade.
The power company began smart meter upgrades in late 2019. More than 170,000 meters across the province have so far been upgraded.
Customers in Sydney will have their meters upgraded next year.

Sydney’s McConnell Library to get air conditioning this week

The Cape Breton Regional Library says Sydney’s McConnell Branch is finally getting air conditioning.
The library says the McConnell will be closed in the evenings starting Tuesday as workers install the heat pump/air conditioning unit.
The downtown Sydney branch will be open from 9AM to 4PM, and the library says they’ll put out a second public notice when normal hours resume.
The work is expected to take about two weeks.
High heat and humidity in the building led to the McConnell closing early several times during previous summers. In one instance, the library closed at noon when the temperature inside reached 37 degrees.

State Of Emergency Extended In NS, List Of COVID-19 Symptoms Updated

There are no new COVID-19 cases in Nova Scotia today.

The state of emergency has been extended to Sept. 20th.

Also, the list of symptoms is being updated.

The province’s chief medical officer of health, Dr. Robert Strang, says they reviewed symptoms of the confirmed cases, and they’re confident a narrower list will still allow them to identify people with COVID-19.

People are asked to visit 811.novascotia.ca, to see if they should call 811, if in the past 48 hours they’ve had or are experiencing a fever or cough, or two or more of the following: sore throat, runny nose, headache and shortness of breath.

It’s the fourth straight day without a new cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia.

No one is in hospital in the province because of the virus.
