Winter Storm Shuts Down CBRM

Police are warning drivers to stay off the roads this morning as a blizzard hits the Island.

Police say roads are slippery and visibility is down to zero at times in blowing snow.

They go on to say people should stay at home until after the storm passes unless they have to be out.

Meanwhile, there isn’t much need to be out today because mostly everything is postponed or cancelled.

All schools in the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board are cancelled as well as classes at Etoile de l’Acadie in Sydney.

The Marconi Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College is closed, today.

Cape Breton University has closed its campus this morning and says it will announce the status of afternoon classes at 11:30 this morning.

The International School in Glace Bay is also closed this morning and will also reassess at 11:30.

The provincial Health Authority says all it facilities in Cape Breton County, Central and Northern Inverness County and Victoria County will provide emergency services only until further notice.

All provincial government offices on the Island and the Civic Centre in Sydney are also closed for at least this morning.

CBRM Transit and Handi-Trans service is cancelled this morning and municipal officials say they’ll reassess at 11:00.

This morning’s 8:48 flight from Halifax to the Sydney McCurdy Airport has been cancelled as well as the return flight at 9:10.
