A violent death at a nursing home in Sydney is among five in recent years that went unreported by police.
According to the Canadian Press, a resident at Harbourstone Enhanced Care died last September after being pushed by another resident.
Officials say police did not publicize the case after deciding there was no criminal intent.
But Nurses Union President Janet Hazelton argues that without public disclosure people don’t know the extent of the problem.
She says the situation also leads to a lack of momentum for reforms that other provinces are already exploring or funding.
Hazelton is calling on the province and nursing homes to move more quickly on recommendations put forward by a task force, last fall.
It called for additional training for staff on ways to identify aggression and help prevent outbursts.
