Two Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes on Weekend

There were two fatal motor vehicle crashes in Cape Breton over the weekend.

A 65-year-old Margaree Valley man is dead after the motorcycle he was driving crashed into the back of an SUV near Waycobah on Saturday afternoon.

RCMP say they got the call at 1:30 and add the SUV had stopped on the 105 Trans Canada Highway to make a left turn, when the motorcycle collided with it.

There were two people on the motorcycle at the time of the crash and both were taken to hospital with injuries.

The man died in hospital from his injuries and the crash remains under investigation.

And, a four-year-old Eskasoni boy died after the vehicle he was a passenger in crashed near the community on Friday night.

Police say the 2003 Chevrolet Equinox was being driven by his 27-year-old father when it left the road and crashed in the ditch at around 10:00 on Highway 216 in Islandview.

The boy’s 26-year-old mother and his two brothers who are two and five, were also passengers in the vehicle.

The other members of the family didn’t suffer major injuries.

Police say it’s too soon to say whether alcohol or speed played a part in the crash.

An autopsy will be carried out on the boy’s body and police say the results will help in their ongoing investigation.
