Two CB Lighthouses on Preservation List

Two Cape Breton lighthouses are among 74 across the country that have been granted heritage status by Parks Canada.

The St. Paul Island light in Dingwall and the Neil’s Harbour light will be preserved under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act.

The head of the non-profit group Save Our Lighthouses, Marc Seguin says the designations are a good first step but adds Ottawa still has a lot of work to do because there are about 500 historic lighthouses worth preserving in Canada.

He adds he expects another 50 lighthouses will added to the list over the next two years.

The head of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society, Joanne McCormick says with about150 lighthouses, this province has the most in Canada.

She adds because of that more lighthouses from Nova Scotia should have made the list.
