Regional Police say a routine traffic stop led to the arrest of two men who are alleged to have stolen gas and several propane tanks. Patrol officers in New Waterford say they observed a GMC Jimmy traveling down Ellsworth Avenue at a high rate of speed at about 9 o’clock last night. After stopping the vehicle and checking its license plate, police said they were able to link the vehicle to a reported theft of gas from Membertou earlier yesterday evening. Police add that propane tanks were in the vehicle, along with further evidence indicating the possibility that the tanks were taken from a secure location. The vehicle’s two occupants were arrested, and police say they were able to connect the propane tanks to a storage cabinet at Broadway Convenience Store in Whitney Pier. The driver of the vehicle, a 36-year-old New Waterford man, faces two counts of theft, and single counts of Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Possession of Break In Instruments, and a Breach of Probation. The passenger, a 22 year-old man from Glace Bay, also faces charges of Theft and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime. Both suspects have been released from custody on a promise to appear in court.
