Twinning Ceremony For District 8 And French Municipality, This Afternoon

A ceremony to celebrate the twinning of the Regional Municipality’s District 8 with a French municipality will take place at the Civic Centre in Sydney, this afternoon.

The event is part of activities to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and ties between Cape Breton and France linked to the historic event.

A delegation from France has been on the Island retracing the steps of John Arsenault from Cheticamp who was killed in the battle.

The twinning ceremony with Givenchy-en-Gohelle is due to get underway at 3:30, this afternoon.

The French municipality is home to Canada’s Vimy Memorial.

Meanwhile, Glace Bay native Dawn Morrison who’s Arsenault’s great-grandniece will return to Europe with the delegation tomorrow.

Morrison and another relative of Arsenaut’s will retrace his steps on the other side of the Atlantic.
