Toronto Star Weighs In On Highlands Park War Memorial

The Toronto Star is calling on the Trudeau government to withdraw federal support for a controversial war memorial in the Highlands National Park.

The proposed monument in honour of all the country’s war dead features an eight story statue called Mother Canada.

The private foundation behind the memorial got 100-thousand dollars from Parks Canada for research on the project.

However, the Foundation says the monument will be built with private donations.

In a recent editorial, the Star describes the memorial as both kitschy and reminiscent of the over-sized monuments beloved by tyrannical world leaders.

It also says the memorial is inappropriate for a noted beauty spot in a national park.

The Trudeau government says it’s currently reviewing the project.
