FUNDING OFFERED TO THE COAST
The Community Radio Fund of Canada proudly supports “Curating Cape Breton’s Multicultural Mosaic – Dedication to Diversity Past & Present”
Glace Bay and Ottawa (September 6, 2018) – Mr. Roger Ouellette, President of the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) and Mr. Bill MacNeil, General Manager of The Coast (CKOA-FM), a community radio station in Glace Bay, NS, are pleased to announce that $50,000 will go towards the implementation of the project “Curating Cape Breton’s Multicultural Mosaic – Dedication to Diversity Past & Present“. This is the 12th time in 10 years that the CRFC provides financial support to CKOA, bringing the total awarded to $327,321. The funds for this project were made available by the CRFC under their Radiometres program, a funding program aimed to improve local programming and volunteer participation.
With the funds received, the station intends to produce a new spoken word series focused on the diverse and multicultural community that Cape Breton has become. From the indigenous Mi’kmaq people to European immigrants from many different nations and newcomers from Asia, Africa and the Middle East, there are many stories to share. Through this documentary series, CKOA will explore stories of courage, hardship, perseverance, and triumph as told first-hand by members of the various cultural communities.
“The Community Radio Fund of Canada’s Radiometres Program (in our opinion), has been the most effective and cherished program a community station such as ours could receive. Until Radiometres was introduced, we could only dream of producing the kind of quality, community reflective programming series we’ve been able to create. With each new Radiometres project we continue to achieve new levels of important, interesting and quality programming produced for our Cape Breton community. This new project Curating Cape Breton’s Multicultural Mosaic is our most ambitious project to date and we look forward to sharing it with our community” says Bill MacNeil – General Manager The Coast 89.7 CKOA-FM.
Since its inception in 2012, the Radiometres program enabled a total investment of more than $12 million in the campus and community radio sector. It is an impressive number of 360 funded projects that have been approved. “I’m happy to add CKOA’s project Curating Cape Breton’s Multicultural Mosaic to the growing list of funded initiatives. I have no doubt as to the significant, positive, impact that this project will have on the community,” says the CRFC President, Roger Ouellette.
