Tenders Being Called For Heavy Garbage Collection

Regional Council has voted to issue a request for proposals for heavy garbage collection even if it’s not clear if it will go ahead this year.

Council will deal with heavy garbage during budget talks but is not expected to approve a budget until May.

As a result, solid waste manager Francis Campbell asked that a tender be called now so that if there is heavy garbage collection it can be finished before the start of cruise ship season.

Campbell is also recommending that the tender closure coincide with this month’s regular council meeting.

Mayor Cecil Clarke recently said that eliminating heavy garbage collection could be one way the municipality can make up for its expected budget shortfall.

But Councillor Kevin Saccary says he supports heavy garbage pickup because it helps prevent the potential for environmental hazards when items are disposed of inappropriately.
