Teachers Vote To Accept New Contract

Teachers in the province have voted to accept a new contract.

The Teachers Union says 91 percent of its 10,000 members voted 80.5 per in favour of the deal.

The union says the contract gives teachers a salary increase of 11.47 per cent over three years retroactive to August 1st of last year.

Substitute teachers will get a 12 per cent salary increase.

Starting August 1st, teachers will have a minimum of 15 per cent of instructional time for marking and preparation averaged over each semester or term.

The agreement also increases the number of school counsellors across the province and guarantees neither class sizes nor the instructional day will grow under the contract.
