Tax Cuts Proposed As Municipal Budget Talks Begin

Regional Council started budget talks this morning with a motion from Councillor Darren Bruckschwaiger for a five percent reduction in residential and commercial taxes.

Bruckschwaiger says the effect of the tax cuts could be offset by an increase in the cap for property assessments.

Chief financial officer Jennifer Campbell says millions of dollars will have to be found in the current budget in order to put the proposed tax cuts in place.

Campbell also pointed out the current budget already proposes a 1.5 percent property tax cut.

Council voted this morning to defer discussion on the tax cut until after they’ve gone through budget deliberations.

Budget talks are scheduled to continue tomorrow afternoon and time has also been set aside for Thursday if needed.
