Sydney Parish Sets Ambitious Christmas Goal

Parishioners at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Parish in Sydney have set an ambitious goal heading up to Christmas.

They hope to raise 30-thousand dollars to sponsor a Syrian refugee family by tomorrow.

By early yesterday afternoon they had already raised 5-thousand dollars with more donations coming in.

Parish Priest Bill Burke says 98 percent of parishioners surveyed support the idea of sponsoring a Syrian family.

He adds 100 of them offered to help the family with everything from grocery shopping to finding a house.

Meanwhile, the chair of the Parish’s Syrian refugee support committee, Owen Fitzgerald says he feels pretty confident they can reach their goal.

Donations for the effort can be dropped off at the church on Cabot Street in Sydney.
