MacDonald shares the prize with a Japanese scientist for their work with neutrinos.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made the announcement this morning.
Neutrinos are subatomic particles with almost no mass that rarely interact with anything else.
The Academy of Sciences says the two researchers have made key contributions to experiments showing that neutrinos change identities.
It also says the discovery has changed our understanding of the innermost workings of matter and can prove crucial to our view of the universe.
McDonald is retired as a professor with Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
He’ll split about $960,000 in prize money.
Each winner also gets a diploma and a gold medal at the prize ceremony on December 10th.
