Sydney Man Arrested In Connection To Bypass Hit and Run

RCMP have arrested a 26 year-old Sydney man in connection to a deadly hit and run on the 125 Sydney Bypass in March.

Thomas Smith is expected to face a number of charges.

54 year-old Jackie Desveaux from Cheticamp was killed when he was struck by a vehicle at around 9:30 on the night of March 11th.

His family says he was a patient at the nearby Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the time of the incident.

They add Desveaux was a former member of the military and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

His duties included the recovery operation after the Swiss Air disaster outside of Halifax in 1998.

At the time of the hit and run, RCMP said they were looking for the driver of a grey Volkswagon that kept going after it struck Desveaux.
