Sydney Chamber Writes Premier In Support of Regional Municipality Changes

The Sydney and Area Chamber of Commerce has written to Premier Stephen McNeil in support of changes intended to help promote a proposed shipping container terminal for Sydney.

The amendments to the Municipal Government Act will allow the Cape Breton Regional Municipality to sell or lease land below market value and provide tax concessions to businesses.

The move by the Sydney Chamber comes after a growing chorus of opposition to the changes.

The Atlantic Chamber of Commerce along with the Strait Area Chamber of Commerce and Antigonish and Guysborough Counties say the amendments will create an uneven playing field.

The Sydney Chamber singles out the Atlantic Chamber in its letter to the province.

It says the Atlantic Chamber didn’t ask for feedback from it before levelling criticisms against the amendments.

The Sydney Chamber also says it feels the amendments are the right tool to help foster economic development in the Regional Municipality.
