Southend Community Centre Moving to Former School

Sydney’s Southend Community Centre has a new home at the former Mira Road Elementary School on George St.

Premier Stephen McNeil announced today the province will lease the building to the Southend Community Development Association.

The Association had been using a building on Hillview St. that sustained extensive water damage in the Thanksgiving Day flood, and the building was demolished last week.

The Association ran everything from martial arts classes and an after school program to birthday parties and community events in the building.

The building was owned by the CBRM, and the municipality says the site will become a green space.

The new location at Mira Road Elementary has been vacant since the end of the 2015-2016 school year and was also owned by the municipality.

The province says it reclaimed the property because it wasn’t in use, and it’s now leasing the building to the Community Development Association for one dollar.
