Southend Community Centre Being Torn Down, Today

The Southend Community Centre in Sydney is being torn down today.

The building suffered heavy damage in the Thanksgiving Day flood and has been deemed unsafe.

It opened as Woodhill Junior High in 1952 and closed as a school in 1996.

The building was then taken over by the Southend Community Development Association.

The Association ran everything from martial arts classes and an after school program to birthday parties and community events in the building.

It’s now putting together a business plan to look at options to continue its operations.

Meanwhile, the building is owned by the Regional Municipality and an official says the site will become a green space after today’s demolition.
