SIRT Clears Officer After Eskasoni House Fire

The province’s police watchdog has cleared an RCMP officer after a house caught fire during a police operation in Eskasoni last year.

The Serious Incident Response Team says it was contacted by RCMP on February 22nd after a fire that happened while officers were trying to arrest two people.

Kurt Daniel Gould and Scentina Marie Michael are charged with first degree murder in the August 2021 death of Andrew Carter Morris.

The SIRT says, in the course of the operation to arrest the two, a distraction device was used that caused a fire to ignite and spread throughout the house.

No one was injured in the fire and the SIRT says there’s no evidence to suggest the officer was being reckless or intended to start the fire.
