SIRT Clears Officer After Chase, Fatal Accident

The province’s police watchdog has cleared a Regional Police officer involved in a chase before a fatal accident in Sydney in July.

The chase happened on Prince Street in the early morning hours of July 6th when police say an officer noticed a car driving with a licence plate registered to another vehicle.

The Serious Incident Response Team says the officer stopped the chase on orders from a commanding officer.

The vehicle later crashed into a home on George Street, killing a man who was a passenger in the vehicle.

The SIRT says evidence shows the vehicle changed direction well after the chase ended and the accident was caused by speed and failure to negotiate a turn while trying to flee police.

Police say Jonathan Daniel Marangoni from Glace Bay was the driver and he’s facing charges of criminal negligence causing death and dangerous driving causing death.
