Ship Dismantling Work To Be Done at Sydport

The Marine Recycling Corporation from Port Colborne, Ontario has been awarded a $12.6M contract by Ottawa to dismantle two former Canadian Navy ships at Sydport Industrial Park.

Sydney Victoria MP Mark Eyking made the announcement yesterday.

Eyking says the job is expected to take 18 months and will result in 35 jobs and 35 spinoff jobs.

Director of business development for Marine Wayne Elliot says the company is the oldest ship recycler in the world.

National Defence project manager Mike Stege says monthly inspections will be done at the site.

The HMCS Preserver was in the background at Sydport while the CFAV Quest will arrive later.
