Schools Capital Plan Released

The province released its five-year capital plan for schools today.

The Education Department says it’s spending an extra $64.2 million in new and existing projects as it deals with higher construction costs related to the pandemic, as well as enrollment growth and environmental concerns.

It says projects affected by the funding increase include the already-announced gym and theatre at the new Breton Education Centre in New Waterford that’s expected to be built sometime in 2022 or 2023.

The plan also involves the construction of a new Glace Bay Elementary School that’s scheduled to be completed in the 2023 fiscal year, and a Northside Middle School that’s scheduled to be completed the following year.

The five-year plan includes 23 projects for a total value of $475.5 million.
