by The Superintendent of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board says work to review schools for possible closure will begin within days.
The Board is looking at potential closures for 19 schools in five families of schools — Glace Bay, Northside, Sydney, New Waterford and Riverview.
Beth MacIssac says the five school options committees that will review the closures in each family of schools will be set up by Sept. 7.
She adds the committees will include two school advisory council members from each school in the family, as well as an alternate from each council.
A community member who’s not an employee of the school board or a parent of a student not affected by a possible closure will also be chosen to serve as a voting member on each committee.
People interested in serving in that position can contact the board’s communication officer, Michelle MacLeod, by Sept. 4.
MacIsaac says the board will also appoint a facilitator for each committee but that person will not have a vote.
The school options committees will have five months to complete their work and must hold three public meetings, during that time.
They’ll have to submit their recommendations on which schools should close to the Board by mid-February.
