School Board To Make Final Decision On School Closures, Tonight

The 16 elected members of the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board will decide the fate of 19 schools at a public meeting tonight.

The board will announce how many of the 19 will close after a nearly eight-month process that included feedback from the community.

Board Chair Lorne Green says all of the schools slated for possible closure will be dealt with individually at tonight’s meeting.

The Glace Bay, Riverview, and Northside families of schools each have five schools that could close, while the Sydney and New Waterford school families both have two schools that could be shuttered.

Green says some schools singled out in the process could close as early as this September.

Tonight’s meeting is due to get underway at 6:00 at Riverview High in Coxheath.
