Saint Agnes demolition delays community centre project

Two New Waterford business owners say their plans to turn the former Saint Agnes convent into a community centre have gone up in smoke along with the old convent.

Demolition began on Thursday after the municipality said the building was too dangerous in the wake of last weekend’s fire.

D11 Taxi co-owners Elizabeth Doyle and Chuck Ogley had planned to turn the convent into a daycare, an incubator mall to help new businesses get started, and apartments for women in need of shelter after leaving Transition House and other women’s shelters.

They wanted to call it the Davis Project, in honour of murdered miner William Davis.

Ogley and Doyle say despite the setback, they aren’t giving up on their vision and they’re looking at new locations.
