Ribfest Draws 35,000

The second annual Sydney Ribfest wrapped up yesterday evening, and the event appears to be growing.

Organizers say about 35,000 people attended the event at Open Hearth Park this weekend.

That’s 5,000 more than last year.

The event is sponsored by Rotary Clubs in the CBRM, with all gate proceeds going to the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.

The full amount raised wasn’t known as of last night, but organizers say they’ll release the final tally in the coming days.

They add over 112,000 pounds of ribs were consumed, along with over 6,700 pounds of potatoes, and over 7,000 dollars were spent locally on food and supplies.

The event had about 200 volunteers working the site, with 70 Hospice volunteers working the gate.

Organizers say a third annual Ribfest is already being planned.
