Report Finds Historic Increase In Child Poverty Rates

The Nova Scotia chapter of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says the child poverty rate in Nova Scotia made an historic increase of 11.4% in 2021.

It says the rate went up from 18.4% in 2020 to 20.5% in its latest child poverty report.

Meanwhile, the child poverty rate for the Cape Breton census area was 27.6 percent in 2021.

That’s up by 11.3 percent from 2020.

A further breakdown shows the federal riding of Sydney-Victoria had a child poverty rate of 29.1 percent in 2021, up by 11.5 percent from the year before.

The child poverty rate in Cape Breton-Canso in 2021 increased by 11.4 percent to 22.4 percent.
