Regional Police $362,000 Over Budget on Wages and Benefits

The Regional Police Service is $362,000 over budget on wages and benefits in the first quarter of the new fiscal year.

Police Commission Chair and Regional Councillor Eldon MacDonald says the extra costs come from overtime as a result of several major events.

He cites the June shooting death of Brandon Kelly in Reserve Mines as an example.

MacDonald adds another example is a police standoff in George’s River in April.

Overall, the police service is nearly 187-thousand dollars over budget for the April-to-June period.

Police Chief Peter McIsaac was not available for comment on the cost over-runs but MacDonald says he’s confident the chief has the matter in hand.
