Deputy Fire Chief Chris March says they had 50 applicants for the four jobs.
March adds the four could be placed anywhere among their five career fire stations in downtown Sydney, Whitney Pier, Glace Bay, New Waterford and North Sydney.
He goes on to say the new firefighters should be on the job by early November.
