Regional Council Approves Sydney Library Project In-Principle

Regional Council has voted to ask municipal staff to explore funding options for a proposed new library on the Sydney waterfront.

The move comes despite concern from some councillors about the municipality’s ability to pay for the project.

Mayor Cecil Clarke says the municipality has to take the lead on the project to help secure provincial and federal funding.

He says the Regional Municipality can use land it owns on the waterfront between the Holiday Inn and the Big Fiddle to leverage 3 million dollars in funding.

Clarke says the municipality will then try to come up with another 3 million to secure matching funding from Ottawa and the province.

A new library is a central part of the development plan for the Sydney waterfront.
