Regional Council Approves Affordable Housing Project

Regional Councillors voted unanimously this afternoon to choose New Dawn Enterprises’ proposed affordable housing project as the preferred candidate for five million dollars in federal rapid housing money.

Council voted last month to send all four applications it got for the money to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation for review, angering some supporters of the New Dawn project who were in council chambers when the decision was made.

The proposal voted on today changed the location of the project that’s now going to be behind the former Holy Angels high school in Sydney.

Before today’s vote, Chief Administrative Officer Marie Walsh told council the CMHC rated New Dawn’s proposal as the best among the four submitted.

Walsh says the municipality will need an official letter of support from the province for the project and the municipality will work with New Dawn and other groups on the project to submit an application for the funding.
