Regional Council Approves $100,000 For East Coast Music Week

Also at yesterday’s Council meeting at the Big Pond Fire Hall, Council voted unanimously to provide $100,000 toward East Coast Music Week that’s taking place in Sydney next April.

The executive director of the East Coast Music Association, Andy McLean, appeared before Council to make the request.

McLean says the East Coast Music Awards are projected to bring $2.1 million in new money to the CBRM with thousands of performers and music industry attendees expected from across Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia.

East Coast Music Week is scheduled to run from April 13th to 17th.

Council also asked staff yesterday to come back with a recommendation on paying for a growth study on the arts and culture economy.

The request for the study came from Joella Foulds, chair of the Mayor’s Round Table on the Creative Economy and executive director of the Celtic Colours International Festival.

Foulds says culture contributes $868 million toward the province’s gross domestic product, representing about 2.6 per cent of the total economy.
