The provincial health authority says recruitment is now underway for Cape Breton’s first collaborative health care clinic.
Transportation Minister and Glace Bay MLA Geoff MacLellan announced plans to set up the Sydney clinic on Friday, two days before a rally on the doctor shortage on the Island.
The Health Authority says its posted openings for a nurse practitioner and family practice nurse who’ll join an existing family practice to create the clinic.
It adds besides the two nursing positions, the team will include three family doctors , a dietitian and another health-care team member to be determined based on community needs.
It goes on to say two of the three doctors are already in place, with another starting next month.
The Health Authority also says the clinic will serve up to a thousand new patients.
The Opposition Progressive Conservatives estimate there are 10-thousand people in Cape Breton without a family doctor.
