Rally To Save Jewels and Gems

A public rally is due to take place in front of Jewels and Gems daycare today as a protest against the planned closure of the Glace Bay facility.

Last week, the daycare announced it will shut down at the end of this month because of low attendance and financial troubles.

Wayne Mauger, whose granddaughter goes to the daycare, is organizing the rally.

Mauger says he hopes that someone else can be found to take over the operation.

Daycare director Catherine Roach says a couple of people have expressed some interest in taking over the daycare, but so far there are no concrete offers.

The daycare has laid off two staff and eight more will lose their jobs when it closes.
