Rally Held In Support Of Donkin Mine

About 200 people gathered at the Cape Breton Miners’ Museum in Glace Bay this afternoon for a rally in support of the Donkin Mine..

The province issued a stop-work order for the mine in July after the latest in a series of roof falls and the Labour Department recently outlined the steps mine owner Kameron Coal has to take before it can reopen.

Some Regional Councillors and the Opposition Liberals say the province took too long to hire a consultant to review safety conditions at the mine.

Councillor James Edwards says 130 jobs have been lost during the four-month stop-work order and he’s continuing to call on Premier Tim Houston to speak with the mine owners and try to get the operation going again.

There are concerns the mine could close permanently after one of the longest stop-work orders in the province’s history.
