Public Consultations on Sydney Apartment Building

Regional Council will be asked to approve public consultations for a proposed eight-story apartment building in downtown Sydney during its meeting today.

The building is a project of Sydney developer Marty Chernin who says it will be located directly across from the Commerce Tower at the corner of the Esplanade and Dorchester Street.

He adds the main floor could house offices, a bank and possibly a small cafe with the top seven floors reserved for 42 large apartment units.

In order for the project to go ahead an amendment is need to the north-end Sydney secondary planning strategy and land-use bylaw.

Municipal planner Rick McCready says staff is recommending that public consultations on the project begin in September, to gauge public interest.

Council is scheduled to meet at 1:30 this afternoon at the old town hall in Sydney Mines.
