Province Warns Parents to Prepare for Possible Teachers Strike

The province is warning parents to start making plans for a possible teachers strike on December 5th.

The warning comes in an information notice from the Education Department sent to parents in the Halifax Regional School Board, yesterday.

It notes teachers will be in a legal strike position on Saturday, December 3rd and adds job action could come the following Monday.

Meanwhile, Halifax school board superintendent Elwin LeRoux says he remains optimistic both sides are committed to finding a solution in the contract dispute.

However, the notice also says schools could close if teachers strike, while work-to-rule actions could affect drop-off and pickup times, lunch supervision and extracurricular activities.

The notice comes after Education Minister Karen Casey announced last week both sides will meet with a conciliator ahead of the December 3rd deadline.

The move follows failed attempts to put together a conciliation board and to take the dispute to mediation.
