Province To Pay For Sydney Relocations: Clarke

Mayor Cecil Clarke says the province has agreed to pay for the relocation of 24 homes in a flood-damaged neighbourhood in Sydney.

The announcement came after Clarke met with Premier Stephen McNeil and two cabinet ministers in Halifax yesterday.

The Mayor says the cost of the relocation is now estimated to be four and a half million dollars.

Over 2,200 people have asked for flood relief since the Thanksgiving Day storm, and Clarke says he’s mindful that winter is approaching.

He adds they’re trying to move the relocation process along as quickly as possible.

17 property owners in the area met with municipal and provincial officials on Monday and agreed to have their properties torn down.

They also agreed to have former neighbourhood designated a no-development zone, and Clarke says that matter will be going before council.
