Province Reports One More COVID-19 Death, 117 New Cases

The province is reporting another COVID-19 death today, along with 117 new cases of the virus and a renewal of the province-wide State of Emergency.

Health officials say the person who died was a man in his 80’s in the Central Zone.

There has now been a total of 72 deaths related to COVID-19 in the province.

Of the cases reported today, 97 are in the Central Zone, nine are in the Eastern Zone that includes Cape Breton, seven are in the Western Zone and four are in the Northern Zone.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Robert Strang says Sydney is among the communities where there appears to be a cluster of cases.

He says more testing will be done in all of the areas.  

Meanwhile, 151 recoveries were reported today but health officials say the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 continues to increase.

There are now 89 people in the province in hospital with the virus, including 21 in intensive care.

There’s now a total of 1,537 confirmed active cases of COVID-19 in Nova Scotia, including 112 in the Cape Breton County Community Health Network and 14 in the Inverness, Victoria and Richmond Community Health Network.

The province’s State of Emergency has been extended to May 30th.
