by Acadian Affairs minister Michel Samson says the new Liberal government is open to the idea of reviewing the issue of electoral boundaries in Acadian communities.
Three ridings that were set up to represent the Acadian minority, including Richmond in Cape Breton, were broken up during last year’s electoral boundaries review.
The former NDP government turned down a request by the Acadian Federation to refer the matter to the province’s court of appeal.
Federation president Justin Mury says if Samson agrees to refer the matter to the court, it can rule whether the redrawing of the boundaries was constitutional.
He adds the court isn’t likely to order the province to reverse the boundary decision but rather make the elimination of the ridings invalid.
Mury says that will then open the door to discussions with the province.
