The province says it’s going to continue doing regular announced and unannounced inspections at the Donkin mine.
The statement comes as work resumes at the mine that had been closed since March of 2020.
A stop work order is still in place in parts of the mine where rock falls occurred.
Meanwhile, the province says it will continue monitoring the mine’s greenhouse gas emissions and it expects the mine to contribute to meeting legislated emissions targets.
Methane emissions from underground mines are not covered under the province’s cap-and-trade program but that program will end in the new year with stricter federal requirements for curbing emissions and the province says it’s reviewing its options for regulating emissions from the underground coal mining sector.
