Province Issues New Directive On Street Checks

The Province says it’s strengthened the existing ban on street checks to give clearer direction to police.

Justice Minister Brad Johns has issued a new law enforcement directive that removes the term “suspicious activity” and replaces it with “reasonable suspicion.”

Johns says reasonable suspicion is the legal standard to be used by police to detain people suspected of unlawful activity.

He says the updated directive comes after consultation with both the African Nova Scotian Decade for People of African Descent Coalition and police.
